First published in 1998, The Grog Log became a foundational resource for anyone passionate about authentic tiki drinks, bringing back the lost art of crafting vintage rum cocktails from the golden age of tiki bars like Don the Beachcomber and Trader Vic’s.

Before Berry’s work, many original tiki cocktail recipes were considered lost to time, surviving only in fragments or as heavily altered modern versions. Here is his Mai Tail recipe:

• 1 1/2 ounces of fresh lime juice

• 1/2 ounce Caracao

• 1/4 ounce orgeat syrup

• 1/4 rock candy syrup (this is a fancy name for simple syrup)

• 1 ounce aged Jamaican rum

• 1 ounce Martinique rum
