The Grog Log is a pivotal book in the world of tiki culture and tiki cocktails, authored by legendary tropical drink historian Jeff “Beachbum” Berry. First published in 1998, The Grog Log became a foundational resource for anyone passionate about authentic tiki drinks, bringing back the lost art of crafting vintage rum cocktails from the golden age of tiki bars like Don the Beachcomber and Trader Vic’s.

Before Berry’s work, many original tiki cocktail recipes were considered lost to time, surviving only in fragments or as heavily altered modern versions. Berry painstakingly researched old bartender notebooks, interviewed veteran mixologists, and dug through historical archives to uncover the original formulas behind iconic tropical drinks like the Mai Tai, Zombie, and Navy Grog.

Here is his Mai Tail recipe:

  • 1 1/2 ounces of fresh lime juice

  • 1/2 ounce Caracao

  • 1/4 ounce orgeat syrup

  • 1/4 rock candy syrup (this is a fancy name for simple syrup)

  • 1 ounce aged Jamaican rum

  • 1 ounce Martinique rum

I am admittedly a HUGE Critical Role fan so now I want the Grog Log to be a part of Grog Strongjaw's Ale.
